2006 Junior Deer Camp!!

 by Terry Herndon

Arizona Deer Association Youth Chairperson

If you would like volunteer to help at the camps, please call Terry Herndon at 623-696-5579 or email him.

Brother and sister get two nice bucks this year in Unit 36A!

2006 was a whirlwind of fun for our youth hunters. We had camps in 20C/18B and down south in hunt unit 36A.

As usual Woody Farnsworth and Bill Hill made the 20C/18B camp lively and fun for the youngsters. This camp has been in the same place for many years and the folks who keep this camp alive need to be thanked by all of us in the hunting community.

Matt Pierce is the Wildlife Manager in 20C and he was there to pass along any secrets he could share with the enthusiastic young hunters and their family members. This year this camp had two youngsters who scored on their first bucks!

This is exactly what we at the Arizona Deer Association want to see; however, it isn’t the kill that makes the hunt and I believe if you were to ask any of these 25+ kids if they had fun I am pretty sure you would hear a great big “YES”!!

Each day Woody and Bill and the rest of the camp crew would have burgers and hot dogs ready for the hungry hunters and their family. Mike Miller of Miller’s Southwest Meat Processing generously donates all of the meat to our junior camps and this year they’re were burgers and hot dogs galore!!

Not only did the crew have food and drink they also had a campfire to warm the young hunter’s bones and hot coco to enjoy as well.

On Sunday the kids gathered around for the raffle that was about to happen. There were all kinds of prizes including a 22/.410 combo rifle and the last young hunter who came to camp that day was the lucky one to win that rifle!! Now that is one lucky hunter!!

2006 was my first year as the new Youth Hunter Chairperson and I wish I could say I had a handle on it—but I can’t. The one’s who made this happen were all of the volunteers that were there to help with the camp. Woody and Bill and all of their family are the true hero’s of this camp and I feel confident that these people will be there for years to come. This will open up an opportunity for me to have another camp that I can set up and run in another youth hunt unit—this is yet to be determined but I see the Arizona Deer Association expanding the youth camps in 2007.

Many thanks to all who helped in 2006!!
