Marty Fabritz Original Artwork
"Ancient Path" is a pastel rendering of an actual petroglyph at Middle Mesa in the remote Crack in the Rock area of Wupatki National Monument.
The ancient artist recorded in stone, a herd of pronghorn antelope, and an ancient bow hunter in a hunting scene at least 700 years old. The modern artist was hiking this remote area of Wupatki looking for a zoomorphic petroglyph to incorporate into a modern wildlife rendering, and wow, did he find one!
The ancient artist carved in rock, five animals that are clearly antelope, judging by their head gear. He also made the animals different sizes, two large animals and two small. Was he depicting adult and immature animals, or was he using perspective to illustrate a herd spread out laterally? And what about the antelope with five legs?! Was this a mistake, or was the artist attempting animation in rock nearly one thousand years ago?
Obviously Pronghorn Antelope roamed this land ages ago, as they still do to this day. "Ancient Path" is a modern artistic rendering that incorporates an ancient indigenous petroglyph in a modern wildlife painting; ancient pronghorn antelope in their age old range, and a modern descendant standing in the tracks of his predecessors.
"Ancient Path" is framed in very old rough-cut pine barnwood, also from Northern Arizona. This heavy frame is partially covered with lichen, further evoking the sense of antiquity that this piece of art naturally projects. The overall dimensions of "Ancient Path" are a little over 40" X 26".
