Unit 23 Youth Hunt

 By Rick Miller

The Arizona Deer Association's Unit 23 Youth Camp was held South of Young Arizona on a portion of the Cherry Creek Ranch.  I would first like to take a moment to thank Mike Lechter for allowing us the opportunity to host our camp on his ranch.  His ranch is beautiful and we need more landowners like Mike around as too many quality hunting areas are closed to hunting access.  Along with Mike I would like to thank Mike Miller from Southwest Processing for donating hamburgers and hotdogs and David Daniels the local Game and Fish Wildlife Manager in the area for stopping in a couple of times to field questions and help out where necessary.  Most of all I would like to thank Mike Hainline, his friend Jimmy and Scott Streich for making themselves available to assist the youth hunters and of course help me in setting up camp.

Unit 23 is a very large and diverse area and choosing a location in which to host a youth camp is difficult due to the many hunting opportunities available throughout the unit.  I would like to thank everyone who was able to stop by and more importantly apologize to those that could not make it due to the location not being in the area of the unit that they chose to hunt.  Those that did chose to hunt around the Young area found a very diverse area presenting both coues and mule deer.

We had several nice deer brought into camp for us to look at and I would have been proud to have harvested any one of them.  In addition to the deer brought by camp I was lucky enough to get a look at some photo’s of a 123” coues deer taken in another part of the unit by a young man out of Payson.  In looking at the photos of the hunt you would have to classify this hunt as being Lady’s Luck.  The two deer brought in by Sarah and Shania would look great in anyone’s home and I’m not sure who was more excited them or their fathers.

Over the course of the weekend Scott Streich was able to get a couple of young men a close up look at a couple of bears and was also able to work them in on a shot at a deer.  Though unsuccessful on the shot it was a positive experience for both of the young men and will keep them coming back for more.
