2010 Hunter Education Campout Weekend

The ADA teamed up with Hastie's Hunter Education Group, the Arizona Game and Fish Department, the Outdoor Experience 4 All, and many other volunteers to help put on a Hunter Education Campout Weekend.  The campout was held up by Forest Lakes, about 35 miles east of Payson.  The goal of the camp was to give kids who have already taken a hunter education course a chance to practice their skills outdoors.  Well-qualified hunter education instructors taught kids about archery hunting, muzzleloaders, glassing techniques, navigation and much more.  Instructors set up some interesting real-world scenarios such as how to decide if you can make an archery shot on a deer if its vitals are covered by a branch, or which pin to use if a turkey comes strutting by your ground blind at less than 6 yards.  The event ran from Friday June 11 until Sunday morning.  Kids were in "class" most of the day and in the evenings, the AGFD provided some talks about hunting and wildlife.

The kids were also treated to some fine meals while they were out there.  Larry the BBQ-guy came up with his smoker and treated the kids to succulent smoked turkeys, chicken, pork and brisket.

Thank you to all who volunteered for this event!  It was nice to see the kids get excited about hunting.

The kids enjoyed some archery instruction as well as s'mores by the campfire.

Archery instructor Mike Rogers set up some great scenarios with 3-D targets.
