Arizona Deer Association Board of Directors Meeting April 15, 2008
Attending: Guests: Pete Cimellaro, President
Randy Phillips
I. Welcome and Call to order The president called the meeting to order at 6:00 Special big game tags need to be requested at this time. We were also told by Ron Thompson that funds for department projects were coming in faster than they are being scheduled and completed, the department would like more input from on new projects.
II. Information from Game and Fish The new hunt recommendations were presented by Leonard Ordway. A flyer was distributed about the department guidelines, which Leonard discussed with the group. There were 20,000-23,000 over-the-counter archery deer tags purchased, compared to 90,000 people who applied for general deer permits. Of the archery hunters, 50 percent also applied for the general hunts. There are alternative management units now for Coues deer and those units are 6A, 23, 30B, 31, and 36C. Approximately 30 percent of the tags in those units will be allocated for December hunts. The department estimates that with the 600 doe tags on the Kaibab there is an expected take of 300; the department maintains that the herd size will continue to increase. The youth doe hunt success rate last year was 74 percent, which is above the 50 percent that the department estimated. The department is concerned with the continuing increase in the herd size on the Kaibab. The Buckskin chapter is concerned with the 600 doe tags, and with the number of archery tags for 13B; the 1,000 archery tags for 12AW is fine. Pete also read an email from Blaine Bickford voicing his concerns with the numbers and the process. Jim DeVos does not think that the current recommendations would compromise the Kaibab study. The board decisions on the recommendations are: 1. Kaibab doe tags – 300 tags 2. 12AW – no increase in rifle tags 3. 12A – 1,000 tags are ok 4. 13A – 45 rifle tags and 45 archery tags 5. 13B – reduce both archery and rifle tags 50 and 35 ?
We were asked if the ADA supported the ABA with their recommendation of no draw for units south of the river until there is data to support it, for example point of sale licenses with mandatory surveys filled out. Majority yes to support. Coues hunts – December hunts and quality were mentioned Jim DeVos has invited the ADA to be a part of the deer capture on the 3-Bar to continue the study. The study group will be camping at the cabin; we were invited to observe or participate in the capture. The contract between Jim deVos and the ADA for consulting services has been signed by both parties.
III. Minutes of the March Meeting Domenick Lopano moved, Chris Denham seconded, that the minutes from the March meeting be approved as presented. Motion carried.
IV. Treasurer’s Report Domenick Lopano moved, Chris Denham seconded, to approve the treasurer’s report as presented. Motion carried.
V. Committee Reports Banquet – There will be a meeting Sunday at Brad Freitag’s house in Gilbert at 1:00 p.m. Please email all items to Rick so they can be added to the spreadsheet. Silent auction – we only have 70 items and need more. Raffle – we have 50 guns and 20 more would be great. We are still working to have an all optics pick-a-prize; three blitzes are planned. Tim Tanner has donated the margarita party for ten, but we need to find a Limo to include in this donation. Everyone needs to work on ticket sales, we also need to call former table purchasers.
New Business – John Koleszar brought up the idea of grant money; the group decided at this time to review options for this in the future.
VI. Adjourn There being no further business to discuss, the meeting adjourned at 9:40.
