2004 Hunter's Clinic

 by Allen Taylor

The Arizona Deer Association held its annual deer hunting clinic held on August 19, 2004, and it was a resounding success.  Approximately 400-500 people attended the three hour clinic at the Mountain Preserve Reception Center in Phoenix, and nearly 40 youth hunters enjoyed a program specifically tailored to their interests.

Our featured speakers were Jay Gates, Duwane Adams, Doug McKenna, Chris Denham and Jim White, and all provided valuable insight on the habits and hunting of deer in Arizona.  Jay and Duwane handled the presentation for the serious hunters, touching on their own tactics and strategies for bagging that trophy whitetail or mule deer.  Doug McKenna of the US Fish and Wildlife Service discussed the proper way to cross to and from Mexico without any of the border hassles others have experienced in the past.  USFW is making every effort to help hunters in their pursuits of trophies south of the U.S. border and we appreciate Doug and his staff attending this clinic.

Chris and Jim reviewed proper hunting optics along with the all important items like tripods and accessories that help make all of us better hunters.  This year’s clinic focus was not only to provide the adult hunters with valuable information but also to involve the youth hunters.  We were happy to have the Arizona Game and Fish Department Education Branch involved, providing the interactive laser hunting games.  The ADA set aside a special area for the youth presentation, and provided, beside the interactive games, numerous raffle prizes.

The Arizona Deer Association is committed to involving the young hunters in each and every event we hold or sponsor.  The future of Arizona’s wildlife depends on keeping our kids interested in the outdoors.  Thanks to everyone who made our 2004 deer hunters clinic a success!

As always, we had a display of some outstanding deer taken in Arizona.

New this year was a display of some outstanding stone knives, and arrowheads.  The man who makes these has taken many big game animals with his handmade arrows and recurve bow.
