2006 ADA Deer Hunter Clinic

Duwane Adams gave out some great advice on hunting tactics.

The Arizona Deer Association hosted its annual Deer Hunter clinic on Sept. 12, 2006.  The clinic was held at the Mountain Preserve Reception Center on Dunlap in Phoenix.  Mule deer hunters and Coues deer hunters enjoyed talks by Duwane Adams, Mike Miller, and Jim Heffelfinger.  Duwane Adams is a very experienced guide and gave some useful information about hunting tactics for both mule deer and coues deer.  Mike Miller, who owns Millers Southwestern Processing, spoke about field care of game.  And Jim Heffelfinger, regional game specialist for AGFD, provided some excellent data about deer management in Arizona.  Jim Heffelfinger just finished writing a book called Deer of the Southwest and it should be available for purchase soon.  Jim is a true deer nut and has spent years putting together information on deer in the southwest and we expect his book will provide some great information to hunters as well as biologists.  If you would like a copy of the book, email him.

We also had an area in the back of the room where vendors showed great items such as binoculars, tripods, game bags, books and videos, and samples of game meat.  Arizona Game and Fish had several employees there providing hunters with information on where to hunt in the units they were drawn for.

The Arizona Deer Association also had its trophy deer display up at the front of the room for hunters to enjoy.  Youth hunters were treated to some fun virtual shooting as well as some great hunter orange vests and raffle prizes.

Jim Heffelfinger provided information about deer in Arizona.  This slide shows the dressed weights of mule deer by age class and area of the state the deer lives.  The lower photo shows dressed weights for Coues deer.

Kids were provided with an opportunity to win some great raffle prizes and also got some free ADA hunter orange vests.  They also got to practice their hunting skills in a virtual shooting game.
