Arizona Deer Association January 23, 2008 Board of Directors Meeting Attending: Guests: Pete Cimellaro, President
Leonard Ordway __ AZGFD
I. Welcome & Call to order The president called the meeting to order at 6:30 II. Game and Fish Leonard Ordway discussed the open commission seat, however, no names have been forwarded from the governor’s office at this time. There were six candidates being reviewed for the AZGFD director position and a final decision should occur early next week. Surveys so far on the deer are showing that the Coues deer are doing well and that there are mixed results for mule deer. Regarding over-the-counter elk tags – 90,000 put in for the draw last year, so far there are around 3,100 over-the-counter tags sold. Ranchers and landowners were apprehensive initially, but seemed pleased with the results so far. Leonard also stated that license sales are down at this time, and also that online sales will resume by the end of 2008, and all license sales will be done from a computer by 2010. He also reiterated that the new headquarters were purchased using Indian Gaming Money and that no sportsman dollars were used. Lead Ban – there is no push from the department for a ban on lead in Arizona. Archery on the Strip – permit-only is probably what will be the next agenda. Leonard was asked about the legal process for collecting on court assessed fines for poaching. Evidently, the collection is handled through the Attorney General’s office on the civil side, and with the larger assessments being given lately, the Attorney General’s office is taking these matters more seriously. III. Minutes from the November 20th, 2007 meeting Brad Freitag moved, Domenick Lopano seconded, to approve the minutes as presented. Motion carried. IV.
