Mills Ridge Catchment

by Pete Cimellaro

When state Highway 188, west of Roosevelt Dam, was realigned and widened, it offered new challenges for the wildlife that crossed the road to access water in Roosevelt Lake.   A widened road with deep cuts created a deadly place for wildlife, particularly mule deer.

Many mule deer were lost to collisions with vehicles traveling on the highway.  This situation also became a considerable safety factor for those who drove the highway.

To mitigate this problem, the Arizona Deer Association (ADA) secured funds from the Arizona Department of Transportation and worked with the Arizona Game & Fish Department (AZGFD) to develop a plan to provide wildlife water on the southwest side of highway 188.

On April 14 and 15, the AZGFD development crew, along with volunteers from the ADA, Arizona Wildlife Federation, and local residents, installed two below-ground fiberglass storage tanks (10,000+ gallons), a walk-in drinker, and a 24’ X 96’ metal collection apron.

Upon completion of the project, the AZGFD hauled water to fill the tanks.  It was reported, that within just a few days, mule deer and javelina began to visit the project.

We hope that this strategically placed water will allow wildlife to stay on the south side of the highway and reduce the chance of collision and injury to both humans and wildlife.

Some time this fall, we expect to complete the entire project by installing one more of the same type of system a few miles further to the south and west of the Mills Ridge project.  Look for project information in a flyer and in the Deer Times.  Please come out and participate!  It is a wonderful opportunity to introduce younger members of the hunting community to true wildlife conservation work.

We wish to thank all of those who participated, the Arizona Department of Transportation, Arizona Game and Fish Department, Arizona Wildlife Federation, and the Tonto National Forest for helping the Arizona Deer Association support Arizona’s wildlife.
