The ADA holds several youth camps in different units throughout the hunting season. Read about which camps we offered in 2004.  The article below shows how successful our Unit 36 camp was!  Congratulations to all the young hunters!

2004 ADA Unit 36 Youth Camp Summary

by Stan Johnsen

(if you would like to help with next year's youth camps, please email Stan Johnsen or call him at home at 602-331-1533)

On the weekend of November 19-21, 2004 the Arizona Deer Association, and the Arizona Game & Fish co-hosted a Juniors Deer Hunter’s Camp during the unit 36 youth hunt.  The camp was a big success, with many youngsters coming through for information, food, and to enjoy the camaraderie.

We began the weekend on Thursday afternoon, setting-up camp and getting ready to host the junior hunters throughout the weekend.  I was joined by Gabriel Paz, who is the unit 36A Wildlife Manager for the Arizona G&F.  We also had a showing by the U.S. Border Patrol, and the Tucson chapter of Safari Club International.

By Friday morning we were up & running in earnest, with food, drinks, maps, and information for the hunters in the unit.  Over the course of the weekend we hosted over 20 groups of deer hunters, treating all to a meal of burgers, dogs, chips, sodas, and cookies.

Following are some pictures that capture what a great weekend we had during this event, along with some shots of the successful hunters that came through camp.

Levi Heffelfinger – Tucson, AZ

Levi shot this buck with his .243 after glassing him up from long distance and then stalking in close.  His father (who is a biologist with the G&F) and grandfather were there with him to share the joy!  This is what it’s all about folks!  (Read Levi’s story in this issue of the Deer Times.)

Cameron Holberg – Marana, AZ

Cameron and his father stopped into camp on Saturday to show us the success he had during his morning hunt.  It was a beautiful 3x3 muley buck.  This was Cameron’s his first deer, and he was grinning from ear to ear!  This was also the largest deer checked through, which meant that he won the Big Buck contest for the weekend.  He received a free one year Youth membership to the ADA!

Justin Renson – Tucson, AZ

Justin checked this gorgeous coues deer buck through camp on Saturday.  He made a 500 yard shot with his .270 to take this deer.  Way to go Justin!

Lunch Time

Lots of good company, good food, and deer talk!

In summary the weekend was a great time, with lots of friendships made & stories shared!  I would encourage all ADA members to get involved and volunteer to help us during next year’s Jr. Deer Hunter camps.  With the support of our membership, we can continue to make these memories special for the young hunters.  Remember, the youth of today are the ones who will be caring-on this treasured tradition.
